Syllabus Broken Down

Assignments

Stress & College Life

This assignment requires you to write down your for largest college stressors. For every stressor you must list three strategies that will manage these stressors. This must be typed. The strategies must be in depth.
You must also discuss if the strategies are new to you or if they were strategies from the past you have never put into place. Will these stressors remain throughout your college career or are they likely to change over time? Will you be able to develop healthy ways to deal with future stressors?

Life Events Stress Scale

This assessment lists several stressful events college students may have happen in their lives. The assessment asks you to select each even which has happened to you within the past 12 months.

Each event is recorded at a point value. For each event selected, add up the point values. The total them. If your point value totals to more than 300, you have a 50% chance of becoming sick due to stress.

After completing this assessment, you must type a one paged paper containing the following:

  • A summary of the listed stressful events you have picked including why you have picked them. This should be half a page minimum.
  • List of write a paragraph about 10 things you can do to alleviate the situations you selected. This should also be about half a page

Family Health History

This assignment requires you to create a family tree of your closest and most important family members. This includes your
  • Mother
  • Father
  • Uncles
  • Aunts
  • Cousins
  • Siblings
  • Nieces
  • Nephews
  • Grandfathers
  • Grandmothers
  • Yourself
After this is done you must also include the diseases, disorders, habits good and bad. If they are diseased, you must include this information along with any diseases, disorders and tendencies they had along with the cause of death. It would also be a good idea to include the family member's age, though this is not required.

Some tips are listed below:

  • Include a title on your page including your family's name (your last name). For example if your last name was Jones, "The Jones Family Health History".
  • Include an image of a tree in your background and the information of your family members and yourself above it.
  • Sort the information by family member and tree it downward.
  • Place each family member in a box (not literally) on your tree along with the information about them.
  • Include whether the family member is deceased and if so what was their cause of death. For example
    John Doe
    Uncle
    Deceased
    Cause of death: Lung Cancer
    Age 56
  • Include your family members first and last names. I did a rough draft without names and just the relation to the person and she said to include their names.
If you are digitally creating your family history tree, these following tips may help.
  • To find images already containing spaces and boxes for you to write out the information on your family members, search Google with the term "family tree" or "family tree blank".
  • To find images of trees including their roots search "trees with roots". This will give you a range of results from pictures of trees that show their roots to drawn computer generated trees which show a section in the ground showing their roots. Some even include fruit on them.
  • To find an interactive app on the computer that lets you create a tree diagram, otherwise known as a web diagram, go to gliffy.com. Some similar sites are located on Google but some of them require you to pay for a membership to their site.
  • For best results, if you have Photoshop or an image editing software, you can grab the image of a tree, either with roots or without and place the generated tree diagram on top of the tree image. An example is shown below

After completing this part of the assignment, you must also type a one paged paper containing the following:

  • A half page minimum summary containing:
    • the disorders, diseases and habits which run in your family and who has these diseases.
    • whether you think these diseases, disorders or habits are passed down through genetic predisposition or if they are based upon one's habits.
  • A list or paragraph of ten things you can do to prevent yourself from obtaining these diseases, disorders and habits or if you already have them, what you can do to better manage them or eliminate them. This should be half a page minimum.

Depressive Personality Disorder Inventory

This assessment contains various attitudes held by people. Because people are different, there are no right or wrong answers to this assessment. You must write the numbers which correspond to how you feel about each attitude. A choice of 1 corresponds to completely agreeing with the statement and a choice of 7 corresponds to completely disagreeing with the statement.

After completing this assessment, you must write a one paged paper containing the following:

  • A summary of why you chose the number you selected for each individual statement on the assessment. This should take up half a page.

Dietary Analysis

This assignment explains:
  • the importance of food and how it plays a role in our daily lives.
  • the Right food vs the Wrong food.
  • the food pyramid
This assignment is broken up into three parts.

For this assignment, you will need:

  • Access to the internet
  • Three days worth of time

Part 1: Your 3 Day Dietary Recall

Part 1 requires you to record all of your food intake for three days. For best results as far as data, measure three days within the week (not the weekend) in your set of three days. These results sometimes provide better data because weekend eating trends may sometimes vary for college students. You must record the information gotten from these sites on the space provided in the assignment sheet. Record everything you have eaten down from snacks to lemon slices and tablespoons of sugar placed in tea. Record the exact amounts in ounces, grams, teaspoons, cups and any other measurement.

Part 2: Analyzing Your Diet

Part 2 of this assignment requires you to input the foods you recorded on the assignment sheet and enter them into a food tracking site online. The recommended tool to log down food is located on mypyramid.gov as it gives you an in depth summary of the foods you have eaten. Professor Okeke has it written that she will have navigate the site to be able to explain how or if it works. When I tried to access this site  on the 18th of January, I couldn't get it to load so I will be providing other sites which allow you to similarly track your food. I have not seen how the summaries work other than Livestrong.com's. There are also several phone apps which track food on the IPhone and Android Platforms. The food tracking sites I have found include:
  • Your average calorie intake - This should probably be between 1500 and 3000 calories. If you do not know your average calorie intake, you can always use the calorie intake for your weight, sex and height. This can be found on some advanced scales or online.
  • Your gender - This is actually important because men normally have a higher caloric intake than women.
  • Your activity level (how active you are) - For college students, this is generally Sedentary or Average unless you are engaged in daily physical exercise or daily physical work.
You must obtain the following reports or information from these websites and print them. You must then use them to answer the questions asked in Part 3.
  • Dietary Guidelines and Recommendations
  • Nutrient Intakes
  • Comparison of Your Intake with My Pyramid Recommendation

Part 3: Steps to Improving Your Diet

Part three of this assignment requires you to complete an assessment located on the actual assignment sheet. This assessment asks you about the accuracy of your data and various aspects of the results of your data.

This assignment does not require anything additional that needs to be typed. This sheet must simply be filled out and turned in.
